Northern Virginia Community College Tyler Replacement Building

Alexandria, VA

The Tyler Replacement building is located in the center of the Northern Virginia Community College campus in Alexandria, Virginia. This 80,000sf, 4-story building of steel frame and masonry construction is designed for adult academic pursuits in music, studio arts, digital graphic design, photography, dance, and drama. In addition to academic and administrative supporting facilities, it includes general purpose classrooms, a gymnasium, exercise rooms, a bookstore/café, and a black box performance theatre. The project also included the demolition of existing parking facilities and all site and utility work.

The steep gradation of the site and close proximity to existing academic buildings presented distinct challenges that required unique project phasing and careful coordination among trade contractors to ensure timely delivery.

This project complied with the USGBC Material & Resources, Environmental Quality, Site Sustainability, Water Efficiency and Energy & Atmosphere requirements and achieved LEED Gold certification.
