I-95 SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT RT. 3

Fredericksburg, VA

Branch worked on three active Design-Build projects in the Fredericksburg area that significantly improved traffic safety around the busy I-95 corridor leading into the nation’s capital.

Along with the widening of a portion of Garrisonville Road to a six-lane divided highway and the I-95 HOT Lanes project in Stafford County, Branch partnered with designer Whitman, Requardt and Associates to help reduce crashes and vehicle weaving at the I-95 Exit 130 (Route 3) in the City of Fredericksburg.

The $21M project extended and widened the off-ramp for southbound I-95 motorists exiting to Rt. 3 westbound. Now that it is complete, a separate free-flow lane leads to Carl D. Silver Parkway without any merging needed.

Three right turn lanes were also be constructed for westbound traffic exiting I-95, giving traffic the opportunity to enter Rt. 3 without having to merge.

Travelers heading toward I-95 southbound will no longer have to contend with an existing cloverleaf on-ramp, instead, using three left turn lanes just beyond the I-95 overpass. The Virginia Department of Transportation noted that the Rt. 3 interchange saw crash rates above the state average and sought Highway Safety Improvement Plan funds to help reduce merging accidents.
