US-421 AT SR-3418 – NEELLEY ROAD

Guilford County, NC

Branch was lauded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation for its superior erosion control work with a project which transformed an intersection into an interchange near Greensboro, NC.

The existing Neelley Road intersection at US Rt. 421 in Guilford County was replaced with safer on and off ramps and a new four-lane bridge. Branch provided construction management, heavy civil and environmental services for the project.

The intersection was originally built as an at-grade intersection, meaning both roads run flat along the ground. This often leads to increased traffic accidents. Safety at this busy crossroads was improved by constructing a half-clover interchange, with one road running over the other.

Grading, drainage, and paving were included in the project scope, along with careful erosion control measures. This also included constructing two large box culverts and draining a one-acre pond to facilitate fill for the new roadway. Improvements were also made to four local roads in the vicinity.
